In Progress

2009 - Present

Works in progress that I haven’t decided what I will do with yet. Usually these start from a single image, or a handful, then develop into larger bodies of work.

Formula Non began in 2009 and took me to twenty five Formula 1 race weekends in seventeen countries over ten years. The photos are all shot from the edges of the circuits, where little can be seen other than some clues that you might be at a Formula 1 race.

The scope of the work grew over the decade of shooting, eventually becoming more formal when I started using a large format camera in 2017. Ironically this method of shooting ended up yielding the only photos that contain glimpses of the cars on the track.

The images here represent around 1% of the total work shot over the decade of the project, and contain a few interspersed thematic parts. A final edit will probably be a tight one of fifty to eighty photos that combines all the themes. Perhaps eventually this will be a book, an exhibition, or something else.

I am uploading the occasional blog post on the project, these can be found under the formulanon tag

Glue is a series of photos shot at Perl conferences and workshops in Europe and America between 2015 and 2025. Perl was one of the programming languages that bootstrapped a lot of internet based companies in the mid/late 1990s and early 2000s, sometimes sticking together disparate systems.

Perl has fallen out of favour as newer languages have taken its place; however, it can still be found in many places and often running critical infrastructure. The title is a metaphor not just for the language but also for the shrinking of the community at the events the photos are shot at.

The full project edit (70 photos picked from approx 1,000) touches on the aforementioned themes but also on the loss of books as learning material, and the raise of AI.

3 Steps From My Bed includes photos taken from the window of every place I have slept in since 2014. This is, in a way, a meta project as most of these places I am staying in are because of other photo projects I am working on. Often these images could be titled “Room without a view”.
